These chariots were drawn by a pair of horses and manned by the chariotee
r and an escort, probably an archer. Sharp blades were attached to the front of the chariot and the wheels. Its purpose was to break up the order of enemy ranks and thereby make the task of the foot soldiers easier. In order to be effective, however, the
chariot armed with blades needed large and level spaces to maneuver, and for this reason it was eventually replaced by the battle elephant.\par
